Quilters, in West Chiltington, has had a long and creative history, being built in the 1920s by Reginald Fairfax Wells, a Brazilian Artist and sculptor, having been commissioned by Robert and Cary Gilson, and named after Robert senior’s mother’s maiden name.
One of its many associations, including J R R Tolkien, author of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit, is Sir Arnold Bax, Master of the Queen’s Music. Bax would leave his hotel in Storrington and catch the bus to West Chiltington; with no heating in the hotel, he would spend the days composing in the library in Quilters.
